Channel 4’s flagship documentary series, Cutting Edge, this week (4 March 2010) delves into the world of true life journalism, and features specialist press and publicity agency, Talk to the Press.
Talk to the Press was founded in 2008 by former Daily Mail journalist, Natasha Courtenay-Smith. Since then, she and her team have written and placed more than 400 true life stories in almost every women’s magazine in the UK, as well as national newspapers including the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and the Sunday Mirror.
Talk to the Press has represented many people at the centre of a media storm, including: Richard Cass, the father of Jamie Neale who was lost in the Australian outback; Juliet Hill, whose daughter became the youngest teenager in Britain to have a gastric band, and Kara Hoyte, whose brave testimony against footballer Mario Celaire made front page news as she resigned the double jeopardy laws in the UK to history. They have all approached the agency looking for help dealing with press interest in their lives and Talk to the Press has devised and managed appropriate media strategies for each and also ensured they received appropriate fees for their stories.
All Talk to the Press clients are given copy approval and are able to advise the agency on which magazines they want to appear in and which they feel aren’t right for them.
The Cutting Edge crew shadowed Natasha and Talk to the Press chief features writer, Boo Fox-Leonard, as they sifted through potential stories at their offices in London and as they escorted one client to GMTV to share her story with Lorraine Kelly. The documentary also features interviews with some of the people who have sold their stories through Talk to the Press and other true life press agencies, exploring their experiences and how sharing their intimate tales with the nation has affected their lives.
The programme looks at the phenomenal success of true life magazines, which are now read by over 11 million people each week. It looks at the issues surrounding selling stories to the press – from what motivates people to do so, to what makes the British public hunger for them.
