How do you sell a story?

 

We understand that selling a story can feel like a daunting experience. But we're here to hold your hand all the way!

 

Our journalists will guide you through the entire process of selling your story from start to finish. We make selling a story to newspapers, magazines and television programmes, easy. Here's the process, step by step.

 

Step 1:

Fill out our story submission form with as much detail about the story you want to sell as possible, give us a call or email us. One of us will then get in touch with you to find out a bit more about you and your story. 

At this stage, we will most likely ask you to email over a snapshot of yourself. Don't worry though - this is NOT for publication - but simply so we know who we're talking to! Commissioning editors also expect to see a photograph of the individual in question when a story is submitted.

Remember, everything you say is completely confidential and off the record at this stage. Nothing you say will appear in print, and none of your pictures will be published.

 

 

Step 2:

If you're happy for us to go ahead, we will then prepare a synopsis of your story and start approaching magazines and newspapers on your behalf. We will run through with you the sorts of publications we feel would be interested in your story, and we'll ask you where you would ideally like to see your story. If you say you'd like to be in a magazine, but don't want to do a newspaper, that's fine with us! It's entirely up to you.

We will also ask you to sign a Talk to the Press contract. This outlines how we work, and what you can expect us to do for you. It also confirms that you are asking us to represent you, and that you will, from this point, only work with us and not any other agencies.

If you decide you don't want to sell your story, just let us know. We won't harrass you if you don't want to go ahead. We understand that people change their mind! And even if you have the best story in the world, if you don't want to go ahead, that's ok with us.

Step 3:  

Because we're independent, we can shop around to get you the best deal for your story.

Once we have an offer you're happy with, from a publication you're happy to be in, we will do a more detailed interview with you. This will either take place over the phone, or we can come and meet you in person.

You'll also be asked to sign a contract from the publication you are appearing in. This confirms your fee from them, and also guarantees to them that you won't be talking to any other publications.

 

 

Step 4:

Once the story is written, we will read it back to you to make sure you are happy with it. If there are changes you want to make to the text, then let us know. Remember, our number one aim is that YOU are happy with the finished story.

 

 

Step 5:

You will either be asked to email over relevant photographs, or we will arrange for a photoshoot to take place. Often, you'll have a hair and make up artist sent to your home too. Most people are a little bit nervous before a photoshoot, but everyone enjoys the experience!

 

 

Step 6:

You'll be paid once the story is printed. At the very least, we'll then try to place your story in another publication (if you want us to). Many of our clients go on to appear on GMTV, This Morning or Five news.

Some of our clients are currently in the middle of making documentaries about their experiences. Others have signed book deals.

And in an unexpected result, Donna Jones, who sold her story about life with Britain's biggest breasts, was innundated with offers for a free breast reduction and a free personal trainer.

And if you decide you don't want any more publicity or attention, because we're acting as your agent, we can ensure you are left in peace to just get on with your life as normal.

 

REMEMBER, OUR SERVICE TO YOU IS TOTALLY FREE. WE GET PAID BY THE PUBLICATION IN QUESTION FOR WRITING YOUR STORY. WE NEGOTIATE YOU A SEPARATE FEE FROM THE PUBLICATION.
