DO YOU SUFFER FROM A RARE CONDITION? READ TTTP CLIENT’S INSPIRATIONAL STORY ON HOW SHE’S LEARNT TO EMBRACE HER PSORIASIS
When Giorgia Lanuzza looked in the mirror as a teenager, she’d barely notice her stunning face or gorgeous figure. Her eyes would go straight to the flaky wounds on her skin – which covered a whopping 97% of her body.
Since the age of 13, Giorgia, a project manager, has suffered with psoriasis, a chronic condition which sees skin become patchy, itchy and sore. With no cure for the condition, which becomes worse under stress and in heat, Giorgia struggled to accept her ‘ugly skin’ – covering up in long-sleeved t-shirts and leggings as a teen.
Throughout her early teens, Giorgia says schoolmates, strangers and dates avoiding touching her because they feared her condition was contagious – though she assured them it wasn’t. As she got older, she tried to go on holiday and live like a normal girl, but dreaded having to wear skimpy clothing or pose in front of a camera.
She said: “People would stop and stare at me in the street. My psoriasis looks like red, raised spots and people looked at me as if I was disgusting and they might catch something. I felt so self-conscious about the condition that it was ruining my life.”
Just this year, Giorgia, now 24, was forced to cut short her six month trip to Thailand when she realised she could only go out in the sun for 10 minutes a day, as the welts flared up in the heat.
Now, four months on, brave Giorgia is embracing her body – and the welts that cover it. What’s more, the 24 year old wants to start a campaign to prove that her psoriasis does not make her any less beautiful.
Giorgia explains: “Stressing about my flare-ups only made them worse – so now I look at my skin with a positive mindset. Finally I’ve come to terms with my skin and have realised that I am beautiful. After all these years I finally have confidence in my own skin I want to show other women that their ‘abnormalities’ could be their strengths.”
